Current Regulations
As part of the Governments' commitment to reduce death, injury and damage
caused by fire, ODPM (Office Of The Deputy Prime Minister) is changing fire safety
law. The changes are designed to make the law easier to understand and to comply
with. These changes will apply across England and Wales. Scotland and Northern
Ireland have devolved responsibility for fire safety law. The new law will affect
non-domestic premises i.e. not your own private home.

Fire Facts
25% of all people killed in home fires were asleep, a smoke alarm will provide you
with extra time to evacuate in the event of a fire or give a pre-warning so that
emergency service can attend the premises.
Detector Information
Smoke alarms detect smoke within the area around it, once triggered these will
put out an extremley loud siren, enabling the owner to react as quick as possible
to the potential fire.

Detector Information
Heat detectors warn of fire when the temperature in the area around the smoke
detector reaches a certain level. Heat detectors do not notice smoke. Some studies
show that heat detectors may not provide early enough warning to aid escape from a
life-threatening fire. However, a heat detector could be valuable additional protection
in areas such as kitchens and attics, where smoke detectors are not recommended.
They are not recommended for the use in bedrooms or sleeping areas.

Sprinkler Information
A sprinkler works alongside a smoke detector. Sprinklers sound alarms as they
activate and are individually activated by heat so they only activate in the
area that they are required. As they require high temperatures to activate them,
they rarely activate accidentally. Once activated the sprinkler will spray a series
of jets hitting the fire and dampening surrounding areas.
